Life-long Howard County resident Shirley Mayhugh Gamber, widow of Charles Dewey Gamber, peacefully passed away at her home in Sykesville Maryland at the age of 93. She is survived by her daughter Linda Gamber Abato, son Charles Dewey Gamber III, grandchildren Wendy Harrison, Julie Pope, Sheena May, Casey Scheffey, Ashley Ella Gamber, and Charles D Gamber IV. Great Grandchildren Sullivan, Delaney, and Johnnie Pope; Samson and Julian Scheffey, and Angel and Jacob May.
Shirley Grew up in Daniels MD and married her childhood sweetheart Dewey Gamber in 1948. She worked for the B & O Railroad in Baltimore for 5 years as a young woman and later for the Department of Planning and Zoning of Howard County for 20+ years. She was an active member of the former Rockland UMC and St. James UMC. Shirley loved spending time with her family and friends. Her favorite pastimes were music (especially piano), flowers, watercolor painting, family get-togethers and dinners, crossword puzzles and she was a voracious reader. After living on Chatham Road in Ellicott City for 50 years, she lived with her daughter and son-in-law John Abato for the last 16+ years. She always said Howard County was “the best place in the world to live!”
