Dorothy Blakslee Obituary

Dorothy Janet Blakslee, age 87 of Columbia, MD passed away on Thursday April 18, 2019.

She was born July 19, 1931 to John Adams Carter and Alice Helen Thorburn in Brockton Massachusetts.

Upon completion of high school, she attended the Cooley Dickenson Hospital School of Nursing, and later also taking classes at Shelton Bible College of New York City, in preparation for her life’s work in missions which she and her Husband felt called of God to do.

Dorothy worked diligently as a Baptist missionary nurse for 22 years in the undeveloped region of the upper Amazon of Brazil, after which she returned to the U.S. to work in a hospital in El Paso, Texas where she and her husband continued their Baptist mission work with the Spanish speaking people who lived there.

In total, Dorothy worked as a nurse for almost 50 years and in her missionary work for 58 years, during which she learned to speak both Portuguese & Spanish.

She loved working with the children and teaching them about the Bible.  She liked traveling to new places and seeing new things.  She enjoyed discussing politics and sharing fond memories and her many life experiences.

Having grown up around horses, which in her youth she rode in show, she always tried to have one or two when she could to ride and care for, this being a loved hobby for her.

She loved pretty flowers and flowering plants, and greatly enjoyed cooking and baking, which she was very good at, but most of all she loved to play the piano.  This she had done most of her life having also used this skill to accompany all of the singing in her mission church work throughout the many years.

Dorothy lived a full life, blessed by God for the sacrifices she made, rich in experiences and dearly loved.  Her kindness and care of other will always be remembered, but most of all she is remembered for her unwavering faith and witness for the Lord she loved most of all.

She is survived by her brother Thomas Carter, and two sisters, Francis Supernaw and Carol Darling; her loving husband of 67 years, Edward Sr., son Edward Jr., three daughters Lorraine, Dorry and Michelle; 11 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her brother John Carter, and a beloved son Samuel C. Blakslee.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for monetary donations to offset the funeral expenses. Please make checks payable to Jinhee or Edward Blakslee, Jr.  which may be given to the family or sent to the funeral home.
