John Osborne Wineke, 73, resident of Ellicott City and most recently a resident of Sunrise of Columbia, passed peacefully on June 19, 2018.
John (aka Jack) was born on April 3, 1945 in Landsdowne, MD and was the second son of Eugene and Dorothy Wineke. John graduated with his B.S. and M.A. in Education from Towson University in 1972 and 1975 respectively. He later received an Advanced Studies degree from John Hopkins University in 1978. John was a certified teacher for the state of Maryland in elementary and middle school, a certified principal at the elementary and middle school levels, and a reading specialist for kindergarten through twelfth grade.
Jack invested his life in education, the schools he worked in, the students and families he worked with, as well as the staff he worked alongside. Shortly after launching his teaching career, he became an Assistant Principal at Longfellow Elementary School (1976-1978), and continued in this role at Northfield Elementary School (1978-1983), and Running Brook Elementary School (1983-1985). He later served as Principal at Phelps Luck Elementary School (1985-1990), Northfield Elementary (1990-1994) and Atholton Elementary (1994-1999). Jack retired from Lisbon Elementary where he served as Principal from 1999-2003.
Jack is survived by his brother Eugene Joseph Wineke, his nephew Brian Wineke, and his niece Michelle Wendell.
The family would like to thank the staff of Sunrise of Columbia for their loving care of Jack throughout his dementia. Finda and Shelly, we love you and you will always remain in our thoughts and prayers. Mary Jane, who recently passed, and Pam Gaylor: thank you for personal care and attention when we could not. You have blessed us.
