Richard Douglas Obituary

On March 3, 2018, Richard Franklin Douglas of Ellicott City, devoted husband of the late Lettie Mildred Douglas; loving father of John Bruce Douglas (Stephanie) and Nanette Elizabeth Muzlera-Mooney (William); adoring grandfather of Annabella Marie Muzlera-Mooney, Kristina Robson (Kyle) and Katie Parton (Chris); and great grandfather of Paige Robson.

Richard was born on December 5, 1922 in Bellefont (Wilmington) Delaware to the late Lola Frances (née Hudson) and Edwin Coleman Douglas. He graduated from Simon Gratz Senior High School in Philadelphia. He continued his education at The Salisbury State Teachers College, earning his B.S. Degree. Later he attended The University of Maryland for his Masters of Education Degree, as well as post graduate work in education. He served in the United States Army during World War II (1943-1946), as a Sergeant in the Army Medical Corps.

During his career in education, he was a former Elementary School Principal in Kent County, MD and the first Principal of St. John’s Lane School in Howard County, MD. He retired after 35 years in education from Montgomery County Public Schools.

In 1967, Richard became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was the Former Vice President of the Kent County Teachers Association, a member of the Howard County Teachers Association, the Montgomery County Teachers Association and the National Teachers Association.  He also maintained memberships with the Howard County Lions Club, the Howard County Mental Health Association, and the  Board of Directors for the Howard County YMCA. In addition, he was a Scout Master in Chestertown, MD and Millington, MD. His hobbies included, national and international travel, sketching and painting in water colors, hiking and gardening.
