Thomas P. Banyas

Thomas P. Banyas, 72, of Columbia, MD passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 14 at INOVA Fairfax hospital in Fairfax, VA.

Born in Hazleton, PA on March 29, 1946, he was the son of Joseph J. and Veronica S. Banyas of Hemlock St, Freeland, PA. Tom was a 1964 graduate of Foster Township High School in Freeland and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania in 1972. He also served honorably in the US Air Force from 1964 through 1968.

Following college, Tom was employed by the US Government in a variety of audit and accounting capacities, culminating with the National Security Agency.

An avid golfer (3 hole in ones) in retirement, he spent his later years being a terrific “Pop-pop” to his grandsons Owen and Jack and a caring great uncle to niece, Elizabeth and nephews Peter, Matthew, Noah, Nicholas and Nathan. In addition, Tom was always available to help his family, friends and neighbors with whatever household problems required his considerable carpentry, electrical and plumbing skills.

Tom is survived by his son Michael, daughter-in-law Courtney and their sons Owen and Jack of Annandale, VA. He also leaves a brother, Joseph G. Banyas and wife Theresa of Lake Harmony, PA, nephews Jeffrey and wife Ania of Ellicott City, MD., Joseph J. Banyas and wife Andrea of Stamford, CT, and niece Mary-Grace Banyas and partner Charles McIlhaney of Nazareth, PA.

A memorial observance will be held at the Harry H. Witzke’s Family Funeral Home in Ellicott City, MD on Saturday October 20 from 5 through 7 pm. The family asks that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN.
