Thomas Ittimani Pynadath, Age 90, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2020, at his home in Ellicott City, MD, surrounded by his family. Memorial services and burial are planned on January 25, 2020 near his home.
Thomas was born on April 24, 1929, in Karukutty, Kerala, India to Ittimani and Theresa Pynadath. He was one of five children. He came to America in September 1959. He went on to successfully complete his Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C, in 1963. He held positions at reputable universities including UCLA, Loyola, and finally spent the majority of his career at Kent State University in Kent, OH, where he was proud to have taught for nearly 40 years. He was awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award Lifetime Achievement, which is permanently displayed at Kent State University to exemplify his excellence in teaching. His legacy continues through the many students whom he has inspired throughout his career.
In addition to his love for teaching, Thomas’s many hobbies included watching Indian movies, playing cards, listening to popular Indian hits and American classic songs, and reading. He also had an enthusiasm for sports including tennis and soccer. He especially enjoyed sharing many memorable moments with his family and friends.
Thomas is survived by his wife Leela and 5 daughters Jessie (& T.L. Ittiara), Mary, Patricia (& George Vettiankal), Elizabeth (& Zubin Menachery), Cindy (& Shon Sebastian), 8 grandchildren (Robert, Bryant, & Shaun Ittiara, Anna & Joseph Vettiankal, Jacob & Michael Menachery, and Sonia Sebastian), and 6 great grandchildren (Romeo, Alina, Leonardo, Rocco, Micah & Aisha Ittiara) who will continue to share his stories and carry on his legacy.
