William F. Wells, 100, of Catonsville, MD, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 15, 2019. Born April 6, 1919, in Baltimore, he is survived by his wife of 72 years, Elinor W. Wells. He is also survived by his three children, Richard and his wife Robin, Paul and his wife Cynthia and Gwen and her husband, Reverend Robert Zagore. He had seven grand children and one great grandchild.
While in college, he enrolled in ROTC and earned the rank of first lieutenant but was unable to serve. Instead, he supported the war effort by working at the Glenn L. Martin aircraft manufacturing plant in Middle River, Maryland where he supported the development of the B-26 Marauder aircraft.
He was highly skilled in electronics and had many diverse interests and hobbies including ham radio, flying, literature, music and languages. He enjoyed a successful career, primarily in the defense industry, initially performing technical work and ultimately employed as a technical writer. Early in his career, he developed a patented heat treatment process that enabled controlled hardening of metal parts using induced current.
He retired from Westinghouse Corporation and loved to travel. He and his wife enjoyed many trips overseas. His affinity for languages enabled fulfilling experiences and interchanges in many foreign lands.
He and his wife have lived in the Charlestown retirement community for the last five years where they have many old and new friends.
A viewing will be held at 10:00am on Friday July, 19 at Our Lady of Angles Chapel, 711 Maiden Choice Lane, Catonsville, MD 21228 where a funeral service will follow at 11am.
