Al Armstrong passed away at his Ellicott City home on February 9, 2026 at age 99. His beloved wife Doris predeceased him at age 86 in 2013.
Al was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. He served in the Navy 1945-1946 and earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University in 1949. Al married Doris Madeleine Feaster in 1954.
In 1955 the Armstrongs moved from Indiana to Glen Burnie, where Al began his work as an Environmental Test Engineer at Westinghouse. In 1965 the family, which now included two children, moved to Ellicott City.
Al was a senior member of the Institute of Environmental Sciences (IES). In 1989 he retired from Westinghouse Aerospace and Electronic Systems Division’s Product Qualification Lab as a Senior Engineer.
He had a lifelong interest in stereo photography and was a member of the Potomac Society of Stereo Photographers since the 1960s. After retirement, Al enjoyed extensive travel with Doris, which continued later with his son and daughter. In recent years, he toured numerous houses designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Al and Doris were members of St. George’s Church, Temple Hills. In later years, Al attended St. Stephen’s Anglican Church in Mays Chapel.
Al leaves behind son Douglas and wife Joan of Baltimore; daughter Beth Amstad and son-in-law Paul of Ellicott City; granddaughter Kathleen Amstad of Fulton; and grandson Tony Amstad, wife Rachel, and great-granddaughter Lindsey of Owings Mills. A half-sister, Patricia Rutledge, lives in Texas.
Al Armstrong will be remembered as a loving husband, supportive father, and doting grandfather.
