Alva Johnson, daughter of Doris and Jasper Johnson, sister of Johnnie, Marcia, and Joan, was a radiant spirit whose presence lit up every room. With a quick wit, infectious laughter, and a disarming smile, she exuded a playful charm. Her eyes always twinkled with mischief and love, reflecting her warmth and boundless energy. Alva left a lasting impression on anyone fortunate enough to cross her path.
Alva came from a long line of strong, fearless Jamaican women who forged their own paths across North America. With grace and determination, she followed in their footsteps, earning a BS from Nazareth College in Michigan. There, she was not only a talented athlete—playing basketball and serving as an assistant coach—but also laid the foundation for her future. Her professional journey began in sales and marketing, but a serendipitous encounter on a plane ride to Jamaica opened the door to the insurance field. This ultimately led her to become the General Manager, and later President, of a prominent insurance agency in Buffalo, New York, where she was both a respected business leader and a trusted friend.
Alva had a passion for making a difference beyond her professional accomplishments. She was deeply involved in the Buffalo community, where she lived for more than forty years. Her love for the city shone through in the stories she shared about its rich history. Equally strong was her love of jazz, matched only by the joy she found in cheering on her beloved Buffalo Bills. Yet her true passion lay in the countless hours she dedicated to uplifting others. Whether leading the Boards of Directors for United Way and the Buffalo Urban League, or serving on the Erie County Environmental Management Council, the Citizens’ Alliance, and Leadership Buffalo, Alva’s heart and mind were always focused on making the world around her better.
What truly defined Alva was her compassion for people, her unwavering commitment to community, and her unshakable belief in the power of connection. She had a remarkable way of making everyone feel special—like they mattered, like they belonged. Her legacy will endure in the countless lives she touched, the stories she shared, and the love she gave so freely.
As Shakespeare reminds us, “The web of our life is of a mingled yarn, good and ill together.” Life is indeed a tapestry of light and shadow, joy and challenge. Alva embraced life, weaving together its light and challenges into something meaningful and inspiring. Through her love, laughter, and community work, Alva created a legacy that will continue to uplift us all. Her spirit will forever remain with those who loved and cherished her. She will be deeply missed by her sister Joan, her sister-in-law, nieces, grandnephew, cousins, extended family, and many dear friends.
The details of the Celebration of Life will be shared at a later date.
