Barbara Gale Haynes (nee Redd), affectionately known by many as Barb, passed away on November 16, 2023, in Columbia, Maryland. Born on July 17, 1950, in Washington, DC, she was a beacon of love, kindness, and generosity throughout her 73 years of life.
Barbara was the beloved wife of Edgar Carroll Haynes Jr. for 51 love-filled years. Their story was the stuff of romance novels, having met over the phone at work in what can only be described as the ultimate meet cute. Throughout their marriage, Barb and Carroll were always the first and last on any dance floor and cherished their time together wherever they were.
Barb was also the loving mother to her daughter, Amy Haynes Rapnicki, and her husband, Casey. Her love for family extended beyond her immediate circle. Amy's friends became like children to Barb, and she reveled in getting to know them and supporting them. Penny Lou, beloved granddog, was also a cherished part of her family.
She was the cherished sister of Jeanette 'Becky' Redd, Brenda Chesler (Richard 'Dick'), Shirley Reilly (William 'Skip') and William 'Boh' Redd (Carol). Barb was preceded in death by her brother, Brandon Redd, and her parents, Wilma and William Redd. She also leaves behind her delightfully obnoxious feline sons, Sheldon and Sherman.
Barb was a woman of many interests, including her love for reading and theatre. She would come home from the library with piles of books as often as they would let her. She loved the theatre and was a hugely supportive theatre mom (but NOT a stage mom - there is a big difference!). Some of her most treasured memories were traveling to New York with her daughter Amy to see shows and shop, with Bloomingdale's being a favorite.
As Jonathan Larsen composed for the song "Seasons of Love" in the musical Rent (one of her favorites), Barb truly "measured her life in love." She lived her life deeply, with an infectious enthusiasm for her interests and an unending love for her family and friends. Barb's life was not just lived; it was celebrated every day with the joy she found in her life and the love she shared with those around her.
Barb's life was full of laughter, love, and countless stories. She will be remembered not just for the life she lived but for the lives she touched with her kindness and generosity. She was a woman of great strength and resilience, who faced life's challenges with grace and dignity. Her spirit, her love, and her memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved her.
Barbara was an extraordinary woman who left an indelible mark on the world. She will be deeply missed, but her legacy will live on in the lives of those she loved and who loved her in return.
A Celebration of Life is being planned for a later date. Please check back for details.
