Berlie Chester Edwards, 97, of Catonsville, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 22, 2025. Born on December 19, 1927, in Max Meadows, Virginia, he was the beloved husband of Doris Wiles Edwards for 72 years. He was a kind and loving man who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Berlie graduated from Jackson Memorial High School and later completed two years of electronics school. After graduating from high school, he worked in a furniture factory until enlisting in the Navy. He then served from 1946 to 1948, spending time in New York, Pensacola, Florida, and Cuba. Upon leaving the Navy, he drove a truck while the Blue Ridge Parkway was being constructed before he and his younger sister, Fern, decided to move to Baltimore where his older brother, Dale and his wife Dolly lived. One of his jobs after moving to Maryland was as a TV repairman at Caton Radio where he met his wife, Doris. Berlie ultimately settled into a 30-year career as a Quality Control Inspector for The Defense Logistics Agency, a position from which he retired.
Berlie was known as a storyteller. His family enjoyed listening to him recount memories of his childhood in Virginia, his time in the Navy, and his adventures with the Boy Scouts he led. He was also known for his incredible ability to fix or build pretty much anything although it might take more than one trip to the hardware store. He and Doris were devoted members of Glen Mar Church since 1957, and quietly lived their faith every day. Throughout their long marriage, they enjoyed many years of traveling and camping together. Berlie was also an avid sports fan. He followed the Baltimore Orioles closely, but any sport would do if the O’s were not on TV. In his retirement, he developed a passion for golf and greatly enjoyed playing cornhole at Charles Town Retirement Center. Berlie’s greatest pride was his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Doris, and his three children: son Bob and his wife Maureen, son Dan and his wife Ann, and daughter Susan. He also leaves behind eight cherished grandchildren: Matt, Christopher, Heather (Vaughn), Katie, Mary (Adam), Becka (Dylan), Tim, and Courtney, and four great-grandchildren: Kimberlie, Caroline, Emerson, and Morgan, who will carry his memory forward.
He was preceded in death by his beloved grandson, Patrick Edwards, his parents, Joseph Fred Edwards and Emma Inez Edwards (née Beamer), and his siblings, Edwin Edwards (Edna), Dale Edwards (Dolly), and Fern Moyers (Gene).
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Glen Mar Church.
