Betty Cooper Obituary

Betty Jane Byers Cooper, daughter of the late Charles Ellsworth Byers and Mary Emma Hollinger of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed away on February 5, 2024.  Her husband, Edward F. Cooper, passed away on July 4, 1999.

Mrs. Cooper attended school in Hagerstown and graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1942.  She received a diploma in nursing from the University of Maryland in 1948.  She obtained a bachelor’s degree from McPherson College in Kansas and a master’s degree from the University of Maryland in 1961.  She was employed at Johns Hopkins Hospital and the University of Maryland Hospital, and then retired from the V.A. Hospital in Baltimore in 1983.

She is survived by three stepchildren: Gail Cooper Reeves and Tom Cooper of Oviedo, Florida, and Cheri Cooper Bergquist of Titusville, Florida, and three grandchildren.   She is also survived by five nephews, three nieces, four grandnephews, seven grandnieces, three great-grandnephews, and one great-grandniece.  She was preceded in death by her three brothers: Charles William Byers, R. Lee Byers, and Howard Franklin Byers.

Mrs. Cooper has lived in Howard County, Maryland since 1967.  She attended St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ellicott City, Maryland for decades.

The funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at Harry H. Witzke’s Family Funeral Home, 4112 Old Columbia Pike, Ellicott City, with visitation starting at 10 am.  Interment shall occur at noon in the Good Shepherd Cemetery, 2805 Rogers Avenue, Ellicott City.  A reception will follow.  Please email the family at bjcfamtree@gmail.com to RSVP and/or to receive information about the reception.
