Betty Gibbons Obituary

Betty A. Gibbons, wife of Paul C. Gibbons, mother of Sean and Patrick Gibbons, grandmother of Christopher, Shannon and Jonathan Gibbons,  and  great-grandmother of Isla and Ashton Stimpfle, was one of the most well-known and knowledgeable real estate agents and associate brokers serving the Catonsville, Maryland community from 1966 to 2005.

A loving wife and mother, Betty and her husband Paul raised their two sons Sean and Patrick in Westview Park during the 1960s and 70s when the neighborhood was made up of many young families and much community activity in the summer was centered around the Westview Swimming Pool.

Betty enjoyed playing Bridge with her friends who actively entertained at each other’s homes and maintained a wide circle of friends throughout her successful professional career in real estate.

Betty was an Associate Real Estate Broker who helped her husband support the family through some difficult times when the Baltimore beer brewing industry in which her husband was employed went through many closures and consolidations.  Betty’s husband Paul– originally a General Manager with Gunther brewing in the1950’s, then Ballantine, and later associated with other brands including American, Schaeffer, Tuborg and National  – often had to seek new opportunities as one after the other of the brewers closed down.  During these challenging times, Betty often sold well over a million dollars of real estate annually throughout the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s - which was quite an accomplishment in those days - and she helped keep the family financially secure.  Betty began her real estate career as an agent with Charles A. Skirven located on Frederick road in Catonsville and continued to work with many of the same agents over the years as the company changed hands to become O’Conor, Piper & Flynn, then O’Conor,& Piper, and finally an office of Coldwell Banker.

A lifelong Baltimore area resident, Betty was raised in West Baltimore, the daughter of Leah and Maurice Abel and was graduated from Forest Park High School.  She had one sister, Rachael McGuirk (nee Abel), who was married to a dedicated Maryland State Senator and former gubernatorial candidate Harry J. McGuirk. Betty is also the Aunt of Bryant McGuirk (deceased), Renee McGuirk Spence and Jamie E. McGuirk.

An Episcopalian, Betty was a formerly member of St. Timothy’s in Catonsville, the Chapel of Christ the King in Chadwick, and lastly St. John Western Run Parish in Glyndon until 2005.  An Anglican service will be scheduled in the future to involve a Mass of Christian Burial said at Church of the Resurrection in Lutherville officiated by the Rev Patrick Cunningham followed by burial at Baltimore National Cemetery.
