Carol Mary Scully (nee Hafele) died quietly and peacefully on the morning of March 29, 2024 at Lighthouse Assisted Living, Memory Care Center, in Ellicott City, MD. She was the daughter of loving parents, John Hafele and Laura Hafele (nee Braun) of Catonsville, Maryland, now deceased. She was the beloved wife of the late Cornelius (Neal) Francis Scully, Sr. She was predeceased by siblings Audrey Hafele Stewart and John Hafele, Jr. She was the loving mother of Neal F. Scully, Jr., and John Robert (Bobby) Scully.
Carol Scully graduated from St. Marks School in Catonsville with the class of 1951. She graduated from Mount De Sales Academy in the class of 1955, earning a high school diploma and several accolades along the way. She, later in life, attended and completed classes at Howard Community College. Carol’s parents were U.S. immigrants, most recently on her mother’s side of the family. Carol’s mother, Laura, was born in Poland in 1907. Her grandmother Antonina Braun (nee Chojnacki) and mother Laura Hafele, (nee Braun), highly encouraged education although they faced limited opportunity themselves in their time.
Employed by the C&P Telephone company in the 1950’s, Carol rose through the ranks from “junior operator” to “operator supervisor” in the Baltimore, Maryland operations facility. In 1957, Carol left the phone company to concentrate on her family including her two sons, elderly parents, siblings, nieces as well as nephews. Carol, later in life, dedicated herself to both her home and family with great interest and zeal, especially towards her parents, grandchildren and great
grandchild.
Carol Scully is survived by two beloved sons as well as a partner-in-law and a daughter-in-law; Neal Francis Scully, Jr. and partner Sarah Hilary Lovelidge of Columbia Maryland; John Robert (Bobby) Scully and wife Hazel Spencer Scully of Charlottesville, Virginia; along with grandchildren Nevin, Alyssa, Lauren, Erin and Leah Scully as well as a great granddaughter, Olivia.
The family will receive friends at the Harry H. Witzke’s Family Funeral Home, 4112 Old Columbia Pike, in Ellicott City on Thursday, April 4, from 4 - 7 pm. A mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Mark’s Church in Catonsville on Friday April 5, 2024, beginning at 12 noon. Interment following in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens at 2150 Mt. View Rd, in Marriottsville, MD.
