Obituary

Carol Ann Hauver Emerick, 85, passed away November 24, 2021, at Lutheran Village at Miller’s Grant in Ellicott City, MD.

Born and raised in Hagerstown, MD to the late Richard Verner and Thelma Gertrude Baker Hauver, Carol Ann was a 1954 graduate of George School in Newtown, PA and a 1958 graduate of Goucher College in Baltimore, MD.  She was the oldest of two siblings and is survived by her sister Linda Lou Hauver Lamb of Bellville, TX.

Carol Ann worked for General Electric prior to managing her home and children.  At GE she was an accomplished mathematician, participating in putting the first astronauts on the moon.

While at George School, she met the late Norman Henry “Hank” Winde, Jr.; they were married in 1958.  Together they enjoyed living in Cincinnati, OH; Wayne, PA; Miami, FL; and Ellicott City, MD.  She is survived by their children, Sally Winde Cortina and husband Anibal Jose Cortina, Norman Richard Winde and wife Lynnette Conner Winde, Polly Winde Surhoff and husband William James Surhoff; grandchildren Anthony Joseph Cortina, Christopher Anibal Cortina, Jonathan Paul Cortina, Norman Henry “Hank” Winde III and wife Ashley Nicole Winde, Heather Michelle Bearup and husband Christopher Bearup, Austin James Surhoff and wife Molly Cross Surhoff, Mason James Surhoff, Kendall Baker Surhoff, and Jordan Jane Surhoff.

In 1982, she married the late Raymond Ralph Emerick and enjoyed residences in both Ellicott City and Marco Island, FL.  She was blessed with the addition of stepchildren into her family, Raymond Ralph Emerick, Jr. and wife Deborah Downey Emerick, the late Clayton Ridings Emerick and wife Susan Helm Emerick, and Michael Hill Emerick; step-grandchildren Andrew Jarman Emerick and wife Louise McGrath Emerick, Christopher Ridings Emerick and wife Christine Kucharczuk Emerick, Sara Emerick and husband Colin Canham, Stacey Emerick, and the late Tyler Emerick; step-great-grandchildren Reagan Delaney Emerick, Ryder Downey Emerick, Claire Rose Emerick, Luke Ridings Emerick, and Emma Lola Canham.

Carol Ann was dedicated to her family and large circle of friends and was a generous philanthropist to her churches, schools, and Pathfinders for Autism.  She found joy in gardening and flower arranging and was a member of the Cross County Garden Club of Howard County.  She enjoyed being active in the reunions of her alma maters, George School and Goucher College, as well as in her churches, St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ellicott City and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Marco Island and was often found coordinating fundraisers and antique shows.  She was an avid sports fan, especially for the Baltimore Colts/Ravens and the Baltimore Orioles.  She learned to play golf at an early age and was an active and competitive golfer for most of her life.  Over the years she was a member and club champion at Fountain Head Country Club in Hagerstown, MD, Hobbit’s Glen Golf Club in Columbia, MD, Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City, Baltimore Country Club, and Island Country Club in Marco Island.  She never got a “hole in one”.  As a dedicated single parent, she managed three extremely active children in sports and school.  She never missed an event or an obligation to her children.

The Winde, Surhoff, and Cortina families invite you to join them for a Celebration of Life on Saturday, December 11, 2021, at 1:00 pm at St. John’s Episcopal Church; 9120 Frederick Road, Ellicott City.  An event in Carol Ann’s honor will follow the service.  Her remains will be placed at United Church of Christ in Middletown, MD on Sunday; family attending only.
