Caroline Richardson Obituary

Loving mother of six and grandmother of nine, Caroline Theresa Stoute Richardson peacefully passed away at her home on Thursday May 27, 2021. Quick to laugh, she will be fondly remembered as a woman who thoroughly enjoyed life and was devoted to her family.

Born December 4, 1928, in Brooklyn, New York, to Pendril Stoute and Vivian Adele Standard Stoute, Caroline was the youngest of two girls and enjoyed tap dancing and trips to Coney Island as a child. She graduated from Girls' High School in Brooklyn, whose alumni includes Shirley Chisolm, Lena Horne, her high school friend actress Roxie Roker, and other historical figures. Caroline went on to graduate from The Lincoln School for Nurses, also in New York, the U.S.’s first nursing school for Black women. She started her career as a Registered Nurse in New York City.

In her early adult life, while attending a friend’s wedding in New York, she met Burree Richardson, whom she married in 1955. As newlyweds, they settled in Washington, D.C. Then in 1972, they moved to Columbia, Maryland, where they continued to raise their family of six children, and Caroline worked as a Registered Nurse.

As a young adult, Caroline enjoyed jazz clubs and was a music lover throughout her life. She also enjoyed nature walks and gardening with her children. Her many travels included trips abroad to Barbados and Canada and an adventure to Gibraltar and visits to Hawaii, San Francisco, New England, and beaches in Delaware.

She had been a member of the NAACP and the National Coalition of 100 Black Women and a volunteer for the Girl Scouts of the United States of America. Caroline will be remembered for her exuberant laughter and keen sense of humor, her loving and encouraging ways, and her supportive nature as a mother and grandmother.

Left to mourn her passing are her children, Cynthia Cedeno and her husband Felix of Columbia, MD; David Richardson of Baltimore, MD; Catherine Richardson of Columbia, MD; Jacqueline Richardson of Columbia, MD; John Richardson of Baltimore, MD; Paula Williams and her husband Preston of Columbia, MD; her grandchildren Angela Cedeno, Anthony Cedeno, Lucia Brown, Andre Cedeno, Diane Brown, Elon Peterson, Selina Peterson, Sarita Peterson, and Hannah Williams; a devoted niece, Jennifer Carey, and her husband Bob; and a devoted nephew, Jonathan Nicholson, and his wife Beth; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Caroline was predeceased by her husband, Burree Richardson, and her sister, Phillippe Stoute Davis.

The services can be attended at the funeral home or live online.
