Charles "Chuck" Roland Hines, a devoted family man and passionate coach, passed away surrounded by his daughters on June 27, 2024, in his hometown of Baltimore, MD, after a brave journey with dementia. Born on September 9, 1941 to the late John and Marion Hines, in the same city he would leave his lasting legacy, Chuck's life was a testament to the love, laughter and light he shared with everyone he met.
Chuck's early life was filled with wonderful memories and entertaining stories. It was growing up in Irvington where Chuck’s love of music (DJ’ing, dances, New Year’s Eve parties), transportation (street cars, trains, planes), and sports (playing ball for the Park at Slentz field) began. He revered his parents, deeply loved his brothers, and reminisced fondly of his family trips to Beverley Beach and Gwynn Oak Park.
Chuck attended Irvington Elementary, Edmonson High School, later graduating college from Towson. It was during these formative years that he met his future wife, Ronnie, the love of his life. Their love story spanned over six decades, marked by 55 years of devoted marriage celebrated in April 2023. Their bond, strengthened by a shared love of family & friends, music & dance, was an inspiring testament to their unwavering commitment to each other.
Chuck’s daughters Kathy and Kelly were the center of his world. He was ever present in his daughters' lives, from supporting their educations to cheering them on to coaching them in all their sporting endeavors. He never missed an important occasion in their lives. He volunteered endlessly in the Arbutus Girls Athletic Association (AGAA), was an Arbutus ICON, and a permanent fixture at Paul’s and Depaola’s. His daughters’ friends were an extension of his own family. He coached countless girls in basketball and softball. He believed in the power of sports to teach life lessons. His coaching style was characterized by encouragement and a positive outlook, which left an indelible mark on the young girls he mentored.
Chuck’s love was immeasurable – he deeply loved his parents, grandmothers, brothers, wife, daughters, son-in-law’s, grandchildren, extended family, friends, and “his girls”. His love of his grandchildren rivaled his love for his daughters. He was deeply involved in Kyle, Adam, Chloe, Josh and Hannah’s lives – always taking them on adventures, taking them out to eat or to get milk shakes, and attending all their school and sporting events. Pop Pop never missed an event. He was always there.
Chuck’s love for life extended beyond his family and friends. Music was an instrumental part of his life. He loved nothing more than a good time – loud music, drinking & dancing. He was a fixture at teen center dances and Van Dyke's dances, his love for music and dance a lifelong bond with Ronnie. He had a passion for walking, traveling, enjoying road trips with Ronnie, countless trips to England, cruises, trips to Deep Creek, Ocean City, and visits to Disney World with his grandchildren. He was a talented artist, an entrepreneur (Arctic Dry Ice), fervid patriot, history enthusiast (specifically WWII), outstanding athlete, health food fanatic (watermelon & oranges), and a hysterical storyteller.
Chuck was preceded in death by the love of his life, Veronica "Ronnie" Hines. He is survived by a loving family that includes his daughter, Kathy Carey, and her husband, Kevin; his grandchildren, Kyle and Josh Carey; his daughter, Kelly Hines, and her husband, Chris Gibson; and his grandchildren, Adam, Chloe, and Hannah Gibson, his brothers Doug (Linda), Ken (Barbara) & Russ (Jane), his brother-in-law Skip Comegna (Janet), and sister in law JoAnn Gallizzo (Tommy). Each of them carries a piece of Chuck's boundless love and enduring wisdom.
The legacy of Charles "Chuck" Roland Hines is one of love, honesty, integrity, generosity, optimism, laughter, encouragement, kindness, selflessness, and support that left a lasting impact on all who knew him. He lived a life rich with experiences and relationships that shaped not only his own journey but also the lives of those around him. As we say goodbye to this extraordinary man, we celebrate the enduring impact he has left on the world. Chuck's memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
In honoring Chuck's life, we reflect on the words he lived by: "Every day is a gift, and every person is a treasure." His life was indeed a precious gift to us all, and we take solace in the treasure trove of memories he leaves behind. Chuck's story is one of a life well-lived, a life filled with laughter, happiness, and an unending capacity for love.
Rest in peace, dear Chuck. Your legacy will continue to inspire and guide us for generations to come.
