Charlotte Cavey Wallich, who was known for her generosity and unwavering commitment to family, faith, and community, passed away on December 27, 2024, after a long battle with dementia.
Born on March 17, 1930, in Catonsville, MD, Charlotte's life was a symphony of love, music, and service that resonated with all who had the pleasure of knowing her. From the age of 13, her melodious voice found a home at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, where she honed her talent with passion and dedication. Her academic journey continued at Catonsville High School, where she graduated in 1947, not only excelling in her studies but also shining on stage in school plays and operettas. Furthering her education, Charlotte attended Baltimore Business College, equipping her with skills that would serve her in her professional life.
Her career path led her to work at a small law firm in downtown Baltimore and later at Dickie Woolen Mills in Oella, MD. She then worked at the Howard County Extension Service, where she grew to respect the hard work of farming. Ultimately, Charlotte embraced the role of a full-time homemaker and mom, a vocation she infused with love and thoughtfulness, creating a warm and inviting home for her family and their friends. Charlotte's 72 year marriage to her beloved husband, Elwood Wallich, now deceased, was a partnership of commitment to each other and shared interests. They were inseparable companions in life's journey, from raising their daughter, to doting on their grandsons to enjoying their time with friends and other family, then later working through health challenges.
Charlotte's legacy is deeply rooted in the First Lutheran Church in Ellicott City, where she was a life-long, 4th generation member. Her faith was her guiding light, and she served the church with unwavering devotion. For 70 years, her voice graced the choir, and she led the Christmas Decorations Committee for over 35 years. She directed the Children's Christmas Pageant, was an active member of the Martha's Women's Circle, taught Sunday School and contributed to various committees, the church council and alter guild.
Alongside her husband, she reveled in over 50 years of camping and RVing, a passion that led them to Myrtle Beach, where they established a second home. There, they created a treasure of memories with family and friends. Her love for sports was evident as she enthusiastically followed her favorite teams: the Orioles, Ravens, Terps, and Gamecocks. Charlotte's fascination with US History sparked annual trips to historical sites like Williamsburg, VA, and Gettysburg, PA. She and Elwood were also avid square dancers, adding joy and rhythm to the Tom Thumb Club in Ellicott City for many years.
Those who knew Charlotte would describe her as loving, thoughtful, and generous. Her life was a testament to the power of giving, whether through music, service, or simply being present for those around her. Charlotte is survived by the family that she cherished, her predeceased husband, Elwood, daughter Debbie Newell and husband John, grandsons Ben Bailey (Grace) and Zach Bailey (Kate) and great granddaughter, Finley Bailey. Her memory will be celebrated and cherished, not only for the roles she played but for the countless ways she made the world a brighter and more beautiful place. Her life was a melody of love and service that will be remembered by all who loved her.
In lieu of flowers, Charlotte’s family would like donations sent to First Lutheran Church 150th Anniversary Fund, 3604 Chatham Road Ellicott City, MD 21042.
