Chuck Johnson Obituary

Clarence W. “Chuck” Johnson, Jr., 70, passed away suddenly on April 30, 2019.  He was born on September 6, 1948, to Clarence W. Johnson, Sr. and Sara Eileen Johnson (nee Ergott) in Williamsport, PA.

Chuck attended Arundel High School, but left early to join the United States Navy following the untimely death of his father.   He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the USS America and worked as a mechanic on F-4 Phantom aircraft.    After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Chuck entered into what would be a nearly lifelong career in the airline industry.  He served with numerous carriers over the years, primarily as an aircraft mechanic.  He retired from Southwest Airlines at the end of March 2019, just 30 days prior to his passing.

Chuck was an avid sports fan and a staunch supporter of the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens.  He had a particular affinity for baseball and softball.  In fact, Chuck was part of a men’s softball team that won the Maryland State Championship three consecutive years (1989-1991).  He also enjoyed traveling with his family, golfing with his son and numerous friends, as well as doting upon his three grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Debbie Johnson; children Brian Johnson (Whitney) and Jaime Walrath (Kurt); grandchildren Alexis Johnson, Chloe Walrath and Cody Walrath; sisters Naomi Herr, Eileen Saunders (Jerry), Anna Nieves (Manuel), and Ruby Shacka (Mark).  He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents and his brother, William D. Johnson.

Visitation will be on Thursday, May 9, at the Harry H. Witzke’s Family Funeral Home at 4112 Old Columbia Pike, Ellicott City, MD 20143.  Guests are welcomed from 2-4 PM and from 6-8 PM.  A funeral service will be held in the same location on Friday, May 10 at 11:00 AM.  Interment at Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Marriottsville, MD, will immediately follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
