Clarence Alexander Wingate Jr., a man of profound intellect, curiosity, and exuberant passion for life, completed his extraordinary journey on October 22, 2025, at the age of 94. Born on November 9, 1930, in Charlotte, North Carolina, Clarence’s zest for knowledge and innovation led him to earn both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from NC State. His distinguished career at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory’s Space Division spanned nearly four decades, during which he contributed to the advancement of space exploration through his work on rockets and satellites, specializing in thermal balances and transfer.
Clarence was also a Veteran, serving in the US Army from 1954 to 1956 as a Mechanical Engineering Assistant at White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico working on surface to air missile systems where he met and married Jeannette Snyder.
Clarence dedicated his life to his family, his work, and his many interests with energy and purpose. He leaves behind his beloved sons, Charles, Scott, and John Wingate, and his cherished daughter, Jeanne Marie Wingate Ashby, along with nine grandchildren who will continue to draw inspiration from his legacy. He also leaves behind his cherished girlfriend of 15 years Barbara Stine. He is reunited with his wife, Jeannette who he shared his life with for 54 years.
A man of many talents, Clarence was an accomplished musician who played both saxophone and clarinet. His love for the Baltimore Symphony, classical music, Big Band tunes, and the melodies of Jimmy Buffett filled his home with joy and rhythm.
Clarence’s adventurous spirit shone in his love of sailing. He found great pleasure navigating the waters of the Chesapeake Bay on his 18-foot sailboat, sharing this joy with his family and competing as a valued crew member in local races. He also fell in love with travel after his career sent him around the world. His culinary skill—particularly his flair for French cuisine—was legendary among family and friends, and his handcrafted wooden guitars and ukuleles were both musical and artistic treasures.
A creative craftsman and lifelong tinkerer, Clarence made wine from his own grapes and brewed craft beer. His fascination with British cars led him to own two Jaguars and meticulously restore two 1955 MG convertibles, as well as his wife’s 1968 Toyota Corona. A passionate skier and runner, he inspired his children to embrace the outdoors with enthusiasm. His dedication to marathon running and long-distance races well into his 70s exemplified his spirit of perseverance.
As a lifelong member of the AIAA engineering society, Clarence held numerous positions within the National Capital Organization, where he influenced many through his expertise, mentorship, and generosity.
Clarence’s story is one of a life well-lived: a celebration of family, learning, artistry, and adventure. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him and whose life he touched.
