Daniel Jay Levine, Dan to his friends and family, passed away at the age of 79 on May 24, 2025, in Olney, MD from pneumonia. Born on September 6, 1945, in Brooklyn, NY to Louis and Marcia Levine, Dan was a man of wit, intelligence, and optimism, traits that endeared him to everyone he met.
Dan was the beloved husband of Diana Levine, with whom he shared a life full of love and adventure. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Joshua Levine and Jordana Steigner, in Concord, NH, after moving from Brooklyn in 1973 to start their family. Dan was a cherished grandfather to Hannah, Ezra, Alec, and Eric, who will miss his playful humor and the stories he shared. He is also survived by his sister, Fruma Feldman.
An alumnus of City College of New York, Dan earned his Bachelor of Engineering before furthering his education with a Master of Engineering at Ohio State University where he met his wife, Diana. His passion for civil engineering led him to start his own firm in 1983 and later merge with his close friend Lou Caron's business. Together, they successfully managed their combined enterprise until its acquisition by a larger firm. Dan's dedication to his work and his innovative spirit left a lasting impact on the field.
Dan's interests were as varied as they were passionate. His love for the outdoors was evident in his enthusiasm for downhill skiing, tennis, hiking the White Mountains and traveling extensively. Dan was also a voracious reader, regularly perusing the New York Times, The New Yorker Magazine and various other publications. As a lifelong learner, he developed a strong interest in astronomy, nature, and the professions of his children.
Those who knew Dan would describe him as funny, intelligent, and very proud of his family’s accomplishments. His humor brought laughter to every gathering, and his curiosity inspired thoughtful conversation.
In 2019, Dan and Diana relocated to Ellicott City, MD to be closer to Jordana and her family. There, Dan continued to pursue his interests and spend cherished moments. His absence will be deeply felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Daniel Jay Levine will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, accomplished engineer, and a friend to many. His memory will continue to inspire and guide us in the years to come. As he always quoted, "I am not afraid of death; I just don't want to be there when it happens."
