Daniel Nugent Obituary

Daniel Allen Nugent, 72, born Sept. 15, 1948, in Detroit, Michigan, died Wednesday, April 7, at home in Columbia, Maryland.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carla Holldorb-Nugent; sisters Gaye Dykstra, Nancy (Tom) Connell and Mary Ellen (Stewart) Raiman; brother- and sister-in-law, Peter and Renate Groeschel; nieces, including Doris (Roger) Makhecha. He was predeceased by his parents, Jack William Nugent and Barbara Prewitt Nugent.

Dan graduated from Cocoa High School in 1966. He served four years in the U.S. Army, stationed twice in Viet Nam and once in Korea. He received the Bronze Star Medal  for service during the Tet Offensive in 1969, the U.S. Army’s Commendation Award and other recognitions.

He earned dual master’s degrees from Johns Hopkins University; a Master’s of Science/Business and a Master of Business Administration. His civilian career included  positions supporting NASA’s Spaceflight Tracking and Data Network globally.

He and his wife, Carla, traveled  extensively worldwide, including living in Easter Island, Tahiti and California. They finally settled in Maryland, where he held the position of director of proposal management and later became senior consultant where he supported large companies to win government contracts. He finally retired because of illness.

Services will be at noon, Saturday, at Harry H. Witzke’s Family Funeral Home in Ellicott City, Md. A gathering of family members and friends will follow.
