Deborah Houck Obituary

Deborah Ann Houck, known to family and friends as Debbie, passed away in her sleep at the Fairfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on February 23, 2026, in Crownsville, Maryland, at the age of 77.

Born on July 5, 1948, in Annapolis, Maryland, she was the beloved daughter of the late Thelma Houck and the late Merle Houck. She was also the cherished sister of William Houck. Despite battling illness most of her adult life, Debbie lived a full life marked by curiosity, kindness and generosity - qualities that were evident in the way she approached others and in the relationships, she built throughout her life.

Debbie was an excellent student. She graduated from Glen Burnie High School and later continued her education earning an AA degree at Anne Arundel Community College. Demonstrating her desire for a life of learning and personal growth, she also attended the University of Maryland, Baltimore County but could not continue due to resource constraints.  Nevertheless, her education helped shape a life that reflected her compassion, curiosity and strong sense of responsibility.

During her working life, Debbie served as a Mental Health Aide for the Anne Arundel County Government and later worked as an Administrative Specialist for the Maryland Aviation Administration and various local firms. Unfortunately, her professional career was shortened by constraining health problems that plagued her throughout her life.  Despite these setbacks she was valued for her dependability and professionalism. She approached her work with sincerity and dedication.

Beyond work, Debbie found joy in the arts and in the stories of the past. She enjoyed musicals and theatre. She appreciated the beauty, expression, and storytelling they offered. She admired and supported the creativity of local artists and artisans. She was also an avid genealogical researcher, spending time exploring family histories and preserving connections across generations. This interest reflected her deep respect for heritage, memory, and the strength of family. Debbie also loved animals - from the cherished family dog - Susie, to the elephants at the National Zoo.  She enjoyed photography, antiquing and local travel whenever she could.

Debbie was a woman of Christian faith, and her beliefs were an important part of her life. The Church aided her in the darkest of times and her faith was reflected in the grace and humility with which she met the world. She carried herself with quiet strength and a genuine concern for others, offering encouragement and support wherever she could.  Debbie’s life was one of quiet significance and served as a poignant example of living a full life despite dealing with the illnesses that betray the body and the mind.

Debbie will be remembered most for her kind heart, her generous spirit, and her intelligent mind. Her presence touched the lives of those around her, and her memory will remain a source of comfort and reflection to those who knew and loved her. She is survived by her brother, Bill - and by extended family and friends in North Carolina, Colorado and Maryland who will continue to cherish her memory. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by many distant cousins and other extended family members who now welcome her into eternal rest.

Debbie’s wishes were for a natural and simple ending to memorialize her life. Accordingly, her body has been cremated, and a memorial plaque is to be placed on the gravesite of her mom at Crestlawn Memorial Gardens in Marriottsville, Maryland.
