Debra Shissler Obituary

Debra Klima Shissler, known affectionately as Debbie to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2024, in Columbia, MD, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 64 years old. Born on September 18, 1960, in Chicago, IL, Debbie was a beacon of light and love to everyone who knew her.

Debbie's educational journey was marked by her passion for helping others. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Syracuse University in 1982. Her desire to make a tangible difference in people's lives led her to pursue a career in nursing, obtaining her AAS in Nursing from Northern Virginia Community College in 1996. Her commitment to excellence in nursing continued as she received her BSN from Johns Hopkins University, School of Nursing in 2006, where she was honored to be part of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.

Professionally, Debbie dedicated over two decades to direct patient care as an RN Case Manager/Visiting Nurse. Her last years were spent at Medical Case Management Group (MCMG), where she was revered not only for her expertise but also for her extraordinary ability to connect with patients and colleagues alike. Debbie's compassion and advocacy for her patients defined her career and left an indelible mark on the medical community.

Debbie's life outside her profession was filled with joys that reflected her loving and friendly spirit. She cherished long walks in Ellicott City with her husband, John, and their beloved dogs, Dominic, Roo, Emmie, and Star. As well, she loved lounging and watching movies with her cat Dakota. An avid birdwatcher, she found peace in watching and feeding the birds in her yard. Shopping trips with her daughter, Rose, brought her immense pleasure, as did the time spent with her family in Rocky Point, where she reveled in the tranquility of nature, walking the trails and swimming at Smith Point Beach.

A faith-filled woman, Debbie's kindness radiated through her every action and interaction. Her presence was a comforting embrace to those around her. She was the loving core of her family, a cherished wife, a devoted mother, a beloved sister, and a doting aunt.

Debbie is survived by her husband, John L. Shissler, III; her daughter, Rose Shissler; her brother, Walter Klima, his wife Mary, and their children Walt, John, and Erin; as well as the children of her late brother William Klima—Ryan, Ian, Deirdre, and Jonathan. She is further survived by her nephews and nieces, cousins, and extended Schilling family. Each of these family members carries a part of Debbie's spirit, love, and legacy.

Debbie's life was a testament to the power of love, compassion, and resilience. Her indomitable spirit and the memories she created will continue to inspire and comfort her family and friends. In her passing, she leaves behind a legacy of kindness, a commitment to care, and a lifetime of cherished moments.
