Douglas Carroll Mayer, 82, of Baltimore, Maryland, entered into eternal rest on Monday, April 28, 2026. He was the beloved husband of Irene (Lee) Mayer, with whom he shared 58 devoted years of marriage. Born in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Dominic and Sophia Mayer.
Doug was preceded in death and bore the heartbreaking loss of his son, Brent Mayer, and his daughter, Beth Mayer Baldwin, with quiet strength and enduring love, keeping their memory close to his heart always.
Doug's life was richly blessed through his children: Dawn (the late Chris) Miles, Doug (Kate) Mayer, Philip Mayer, and Jeff (Julie) Mayer. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Meagan Pigiaditis, Christopher Miles, Brandon Miles, Dominic Mayer, Emmarie Mayer, Eliza Mayer, Cassandra Orr, and Gage Baldwin; as well as his great-grandchildren: Dimitri Pigiaditis, Leo Orr, Naomi Baldwin, and Caleb Baldwin. Each of them was a source of pride, delight, and deep affection.
Doug proudly served in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged. He then joined the Steamfitters Local 486 and while working started college. He then followed his calling into ministry, graduating from Washington Bible College with a bachelor’s degree and was ordained as a pastor at Bible Fellowship Church, where he faithfully served as an assistant pastor and as a teacher. Sharing God’s Word wasn’t simply something Doug did - it was the very essence of who he was.
He loved God's Word deeply and was always ready to talk about it, teach it, or encourage someone with it. His faith shaped every part of his life, and he was an incredible example to family, friends, and even others who did not know him. He prayed that all would come to know and grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ. His church family held a special place in his heart and teaching Bible study and sharing the Gospel brought him great fulfillment and purpose.
He had a deep love for his family and found great joy in family gatherings filled with laughter, playfulness, and his signature “goofing off” with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and anyone fortunate enough to be present. Doug had a knack for finding the best bargains and took pride in a good deal. He enjoyed watching Ravens football and was well known for sending humorous “peanut gallery” texts during games - especially when the Ravens were losing. In quieter moments, he enjoyed old Westerns, cooking shows, and baking bread, a hobby he was pursuing with passion. He had a deep interest in end-times prophecy, a subject which he studied and taught with enthusiasm.
Doug lived a life of purpose, kindness, and unwavering faith as a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, and a spiritual mentor to many. Though Doug will be deeply missed, there is comfort in knowing he is now at peace in the presence of the Lord. We hold close to the promise that one day we will be reunited with him in Heaven, where there is no more death, sorrow, pain, or suffering - only everlasting joy.
