Elizabeth McCulley Obituary

Elizabeth W. McCulley, affectionately known to many as Betty, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2025, in Frederick, Maryland. Born on April 19, 1924, Betty's life was characterized by her trailblazing spirit, her warm presence, and her unwavering commitment to her family and community.

Betty's legacy is one of firsts and fortitude. Moving to Laurel, Maryland, she shattered glass ceilings by becoming the first woman in the state to hold a liquor license. Her entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly as she operated Island Liquors in Laurel, a business that thrived under her leadership until her well-deserved retirement. Beyond her business acumen, Betty served as the president of the Maryland Liquor Dealers Association, where she championed the interests of consumers and businesses alike. Her persuasive voice and steadfast efforts were instrumental in lobbying in Annapolis for  significant legislative and consumer changes.

Betty's life was rich with interests that reflected her lively and engaging personality. She was an ardent fan of the Baltimore Ravens, her spirit soaring with every touchdown and tackle. Her love for the game of golf was evident both on the greens and in the comfort of her home, where she watched tournaments with keen interest. Betty's thirst for knowledge and current events was insatiable, and she indulged in the world of news with an appetite that was never quite satisfied.

Above all, Betty's heart was devoted to her family. She is survived by her loving son, Robert McCulley( Jean); her cherished daughter, Sandy Kountz (Jerry); her adoring grandchildren, Adam Miceli, Lauren Kountz (Jayme), and Katelyn Radford (Kory); and her treasured great-grandchildren, Coleman, Carter, and Arlo Miceli and Taylor and Porter Radford.  Her nieces and nephews, too, held a special place in her life, each of them touched by her kindness and warmth.

Betty's life was a testament to her loving, kind, and friendly nature. She was a beacon of light in the lives of those who knew her, offering a smile, a listening ear, and a helping hand to friends and strangers alike. Her passion for life, her dedication to her loved ones, and her impact on the community will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

As we bid farewell to Elizabeth W. McCulley, we celebrate the remarkable woman she was. A pioneer, a matriarch, and a friend, Betty's indomitable spirit and the love she shared will continue to inspire and guide us. Her memory will live on, cherished and honored by all who were fortunate enough to have known her.
