Elizabeth Ann Fitzer, the loving wife of Henry J. Fitzer, Jr. (Hank) and mother of Julia E. Fitzer (Julie), passed on to her Heavenly home on Saturday morning, July 19, 2025, after a long struggle with declining health.
Known affectionately as Betty to family and friends, she was born in Cecil County, Md. on July 4, 1950, daughter to Albert F. and Sarah E. Lewis, now deceased. She was also predeceased by her younger sister, Sarah L. Lewis (Sally).
Betty’s family moved to Baltimore during her early childhood. She graduated from Parkville High School in 1968 and attended (then) Towson State College, where she and her future husband Hank first met. Betty graduated from Towson in 1972 with a degree in Elementary Education and briefly taught in Salisbury, Md.
Returning to the Baltimore area in 1974, she took employment with the State of Maryland, eventually working for the Maryland Department of Human Resources until retiring after more than 30 years of service. She has very close friends from her years there,
Betty and Hank married in 1976 and settled in Catonsville. Md., where they raised their daughter Julie, made many friends in the community and happily resided for 41 years, before moving to a retirement community in Ellicott City, Md.
Betty loved music, in its many forms. She had a beautiful voice and sang in her retirement community choir. In her earlier years, she also played piano. She was originally a member of Loch Raven United Methodist Church, then Wesley Memorial United Methodist (where she taught Sunday School for many years), and more recently Catonsville United Methodist. She enjoyed vacations with her family and travel with her husband around the U.S. to attend conferences. She was loved as a real “people” person, volunteering on work and welcoming committees at conferences and reunions – always ready with a smile and a desire to get to know and help others.
She is survived by her husband Hank and daughter Julie, as well as by a brother and sister-in law Ward and Mary Pivec, nephews Alek and Matthew Pivec, niece Ivy Horan, and by a brother and sister -in-law John and Debbie Fitzer, nephew Jeremy Fitzer, and nieces Beth and Alicia Fitzer.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty’s memory to Catonsville United Methodist Church, 6 Melvin Ave., Catonsville, Md. 21228 or to Kennedy Krieger Institute Foundation, 707 North Broadway, Baltimore, Md. 21205.
