Erika von Soosten Hoelk , 97, of Columbia, Maryland entered into eternal peace and rest on Monday, April 27, 2026. She was the beloved wife of John C. Hoelk, who died in 2016, just two days after their 60th wedding anniversary. Born in Hemmoor, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Heinrich and Margarete von Soosten.
Erika was a life-long Lutheran. Throughout her life, even into her 90’s, she could be found working around the house. She had a strong work ethic and found great pleasure and reward in keeping busy with housework and yard work. Tending to her flower gardens brought her much happiness. She also enjoyed yard sales, watching professional football and golf and old westerns on television.
Erika is survived by her children: Linda Hanus (Cliff), JoAnn Marvel (Jon), Barbara Moseman (John) and Mark Hoelk (Marybeth Dugan). She is also survived by her grandchildren: Christopher Moseman (Stephanie Starnes), Kimberly Moseman (Maggie Mehan), and Johnny Moseman; her sisters, Helga Motrynczuk and Monika Ruchleben; and her canine companion, “Pepper.” In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by several sisters and brothers in Germany and her beloved canine couch companion, “Sadie”.
“She lived a nice long life. Think of how far she and the world have come! From Germany to the United States, wars, space travel, the internet to the whole world on a device you hold in your hand.” (Michael Dunne, family friend)
Erika’s funeral service will take place on Friday, June 12, 2026 beginning promptly at 1 p.m. at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery located at 11301 Crain Hwy. Cheltenham, Maryland 20623.
Relatives and friends are also invited to attend a celebration of life gathering on Saturday, June 13, 2026. Please contact Barbara or Mark for further details.
