Evelyn Marian Hershfeld

Evelyn Marian Hershfeld, nee Opolko, died peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, March 20, 2023 at Charter Senior Living in Columbia, Maryland. Evelyn was born May 18, 1936 in Baltimore, MD.

She was the daughter of Constantine Opolko and Mary DeSavitch Opolko of Baltimore, MD, deceased. She was predeceased by siblings Frank Opolko, Helen Opolko Gipprich and Constantine Opolko.

Evelyn Hershfeld graduated from Southern High School in Baltimore, MD in 1953. Evelyn married her high school sweetheart, Donald, in June of 1958.

Evelyn was dedicated to her family, engaged in her community, a fabulous cook, and friend to all. Evelyn was an active member of the Church of the Resurrection Roman Catholic community. She sang in the choir for over forty years and for many years was the choir’s “Sunshine Lady” – recognizing significant events in choir members’ lives. Evelyn also volunteered with the pastoral team at Howard County General Hospital, visiting and praying with patients.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, Donald J. Hershfeld, her sons:  Donald Christopher Hershfeld and daughter-in-law, Karen Hershfeld of Oakland, MD; daughter-in-law Alena Hershfeld of Ellicott City, MD; Michael Howard Hershfeld and daughter-in-law Mary Kate Hershfeld of Catonsville, MD; William David Hershfeld and daughter-in-law Laura Hershfeld of Annapolis, MD and daughter Mary Theresa Howells and son-in-law William Howells of Silver Spring, MD. Son Matthew Gerard Hershfeld predeceased Evelyn. Evelyn delighted in her nine grandchildren: Emma and Samuel Howells, Nicholas, Olivia and Nolan Hershfeld, Catherine and Ethan Hershfeld, Mikhail and Michelle Hershfeld.

Relatives and friends are welcome to visit with the family at Harry H. Witzke’s Family Funeral Home, 4112 Old Columbia Pike in Ellicott City on Monday, March 27, 2023 from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said by Monsignor Dietzenbach at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Ellicott City on Tuesday, March 28 at 10:30 a.m. 3755 St. Paul Street, Ellicott City, MD 21043. The interment at Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens in West Friendship, MD will immediately follow the Mass. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City, MD starting at 1:00 pm.
