Frank Derby, age 78, of Columbia, Maryland, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026.
Frank was a proud U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran who continued his lifelong commitment to service through his work with the Howard County Police Auxiliary and as an employee of the National Security Agency. His sense of duty, integrity, and quiet strength defined both his career and his personal life.
Frank shared a beautiful 55-year marriage with his beloved wife, Marietta Derby, with whom he built a loving and devoted family. He was a dedicated father and grandfather whose presence brought steadiness, laughter, and care to everyone around him.
He is survived by his wife, Marietta Derby; his brother, Ed Derby and wife Nancy; his sister, Irene Derby; his children, April Mitchell and husband Dan, and Brian Derby and wife Susan; and his cherished grandchildren, Mercedes Johnson, Brooke Miller and husband Jeff, and Kristen Arnold.
Frank had a passion for snowmobiling with his family, enjoyed golfing, and never passed up ice cream, horses, or dessert before dinner—a tradition that always made people smile. He was known for his generosity, his willingness to help anyone in need, and the genuine kindness he showed throughout his life.
Above all, Frank will be remembered as an amazing man, a loving husband, a devoted father, and a friend to many. His legacy of service, love, and selflessness will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
