George Martiyan Obituary

George Ihor Martiyan, a man of profound joy and relentless optimism, passed away at the age of 77 on December 4, 2025, in Ellicott City, Maryland, due to natural causes. Born on April 11, 1948, in Regensburg, Germany, to Ukrainian immigrants, George embodied the spirit of perseverance and hope that defined his generation.

George's life was a testament to his resilience and the power of education. After a modest upbringing, he pursued his passion for mathematics and earned a Bachelor's degree from Norwich University, followed by a Master's in Management from Troy State University. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a distinguished career as a major in the U.S. Army, from which he retired with honors. George's dedication to service extended beyond his military career as he became a successful small business owner, touching the lives of many in his community.

A devoted Christian, George's faith was the cornerstone of his existence. He received a lifetime service award from St. Andrew's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, a recognition of his unwavering commitment to his religious community. His voice, a familiar and cherished presence, would resonate through the church as he sang in the choir, bringing solace and inspiration to all who heard him.

George's zest for life was evident in his diverse interests. An avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles and the Maryland Terrapins, he also found joy in the tranquility of yard work and the adventure of Viking River cruises. His laughter was infectious, his jokes legendary, and his love for his family's Napoleon dessert was unmatched. Yet, it was his love for eating, drinking, laughing, and telling jokes that truly defined his character.

Family was the epicenter of George's world. He is survived by his beloved wife, Rona of 53 years, his sons Adam and Stefan, daughter-in-law Kate, daughter-in-law Roxana, granddaughter Leora, grandsons Crosby and Kaveh, and granddaughter Lola. His older sister, Helena, also remains to honor his memory. Each of these individuals were the beneficiaries of George's selfless love and his unwavering optimism.

Those who knew George would describe him as funny, selfless, and optimistic. He deeply loved his children and grandchildren, and his presence in their lives was a source of constant joy and guidance. His laughter filled their homes, and his wisdom guided their paths.

As we remember George, we are reminded of the words of Albert Einstein, "Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile." George's life was a living embodiment of this sentiment, and his legacy will continue to shine through the lives of those he touched.

George Ihor Martiyan's journey through life was marked by laughter, love, and the tireless pursuit of happiness. We bid farewell to a man who was not only the heart of his family but also a beacon of light in his community. His memory will live on, as bright and enduring as the principles by which he lived his life.
