George Jeffrey Tolen, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2025, at the age of 76. Born on November 7, 1948, in Havre de Grace, Maryland, the youngest of five children of Grace and Joseph Tolen, George's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family, his innovative spirit in his professional endeavors, and his generous contributions to his community.
George graduated from Towson University in 1970 with a degree in chemistry, which laid the groundwork for a distinguished career in the polyurethane foam industry. For 42 years, George served as the Vice President of Engineering at William T. Burnett and Company, where he designed, developed, and patented specialized equipment and processes related to the polyurethane foam industry. His work not only advanced the field but also demonstrated his commitment to excellence and innovation.
Beyond his professional success, George was active in his local community. He devoted his time and talents as a Junior Warden and Vestry Member at St. John's Episcopal Church, where his guidance and wisdom were deeply valued. His love for history and dedication to preserving it for future generations was evident in his role as a board member of the Howard County Historical Society. Through these roles, George touched the lives of many and left an indelible mark on the community he held dear.
George's personal life was filled with the joy of shared interests and laughter. His love for restoring antique cars and woodworking showcased his meticulous attention to detail and patience. On the golf course, George's friendly competitiveness and sense of humor were always in full swing, much to the delight of his companions.
At home, George was the epitome of a family man. His beloved wife, Jane, was his partner in all things, and together they built a life filled with love and mutual respect. His daughter, Laura, and son-in-law, Tony, knew they could always rely on George's thoughtful advice and unwavering support. His granddaughters, Sarah and Ella, will remember their
“Pop Pop” as a beacon of kindness and a source of endless funny stories that could light up any room.
Those who knew George will remember him as a man who approached life with a friendly demeanor, a ready smile, and a willingness to lend a helping hand. His legacy is one of love, laughter, and a profound impact on the lives of those around him. George will be deeply missed, but the memories he created will continue to inspire and comfort his family and friends for years to come. His was a life well-lived, full of purpose and joy, and he will be remembered with fondness and admiration by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
George is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jane England Tolen, daughter, Laura Scarpaci (Tony), granddaughters Sarah and Ella, sister Pamela Brown, sister Stephanie Deabreu (Ronald), and brother Doug. The funeral for George will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025 at 11:00 am at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 9120 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, MD 21042
