Hemalatha (Jeba) George was born on July 26, 1966 to Shanthi and D.T. Jayachandran in Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu, India as the oldest of four daughters. She gave her heart and hand in marriage to George Sundaram on June 3, 1991. They had two children, Deepak and Sarah, who she loved fiercely.
Hema was a passionate, multitalented individual and beloved in the community. She graduated from Bain School in 1984, completed her undergraduate studies at Women’s Christian College in 1987, received a master’s degree in Mathematics at Madras Christian College in 1989, and finally attained an MPhil—the most advanced master’s degree available in India—from Annamalai University in 1991 studying Graph Theory. She went on to serve as math faculty in India as well as Howard County, and ended her career as the manager of a health analytics team at Johns Hopkins Health. She was an active member of Glen Mar United Methodist Church and gave her time and service to the Care Ministry.
Having committed her life to the Lord, Hema’s faith provided an infinite source of strength and love that she shared unconditionally. She brought people together with her laughter, embraced strangers like family, and lived her life to the fullest. Even as she began her battle against cancer in 2011, her smile only grew brighter. She taught us all how to live boldly and indeed, her infectious aura will be greatly missed. Hema was a faithful wife, nurturing and guiding mother, adorable daughter, caring sister, loving aunt, affectionate niece, and a dear friend.
On September 12, 2021, Hema peacefully transitioned to her place by God’s side. She is survived by her husband George, children Deepak and Sarah, mother Shanthi, three sisters Sheba, Rummia, and Sharmila, her nieces and nephews, and other family and friends who she loved.
Family will receive friends at the Glen Mar United Methodist Church on Friday, September 17, 2021, from 6 – 8 p.m. and Saturday, September 18, 2021, from 9 – 10 a.m. A celebration of her life will be held during a funeral service beginning 10 a.m. EST.
