Herbert O’Conor McNally passed away peacefully at home on February 11 at the age of 81.
Herb is survived by his daughter, Michele Lee (nee. McNally) Smith and her husband, Scott A. Smith, of Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania, his son, Michael Todd McNally and his wife Aimee W. McNally, of Canton, Connecticut, his grandson, James Edward Colliflower, Jr., and granddaughters, Katelyn Marie Smith, Sydney Michele Smith, Skylar Kelsey McNally, and Fiona Ireland McNally. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan Helen (nee. Reitz) McNally, sisters, Mary Lucia (nee. McNally) Avara and Mary Christine (nee. McNally) Rigger.
Herb was born on February 16, 1938 in Catonsville, Maryland to William Vincent “Bo” McNally and Frances Lucia (nee. O’Connell) McNally. He graduated from Catonsville High School and married his high school sweetheart, Joan, on October 17, 1959. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage just prior to her passing in 2019.
Herb joined the United States Army Reserves prior to achieving an Associates’ Degree. He went on to become an accomplished sales executive in the food industry. Herb was a generous and kind-hearted individual who maintained an extensive network of close friendships, and was a passionate fan of the Washington Capitals, Nationals and Redskins. Herb’s family and friends remember him as a source of selfless encouragement and pragmatism, with a gift for storytelling and a knack for nicknaming. He was an active and dedicated member and volunteer at St. Mark Church in Catonsville, Maryland and St. Alphonsus Rodriguez Church in Woodstock, Maryland.
The family will receive visitors at Harry H. Witzke’s Family Funeral Home, 4112 Old Columbia Pike, Ellicott City, Maryland on Monday, February 17 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. A mass of Catholic burial is scheduled for Tuesday, February 18 at 11am at St. Alphonsus Rodriguez Catholic Church, 10800 Old Court Road in Woodstock, Maryland. Interment will follow at St. Alphonsus Cemetery in Woodstock.
