Ian Hill Obituary

Ian Turnbull Hill of Ellicott City, Maryland, passed away on May 3, 2026 at the age of 93, following heart failure.

Ian was born on November 29, 1932, in Glen Ferris, West Virginia, where he spent his early childhood before relocating to Niagara Falls, NY.  After graduating from the University of Rochester and completing service in the U.S. Navy, he settled in Maryland, where he made his home and raised his family since the early 1960s.  Ian was a deeply intelligent man with an avid curiosity about all things, especially in the fields of science and engineering.  As an engineer with Westinghouse, he traveled the world and eventually retired in 1994 as the head of the Field Engineering & Services (FE&S) department, a group he was enormously proud of and honored to lead.

Ian was loved and admired by his family and will be remembered as a loving husband and devoted father, mentor, and role model to his three children, as well as a beloved grandfather to his four grandchildren.  He valued his other family connections as well, maintaining contact with relatives all over the country, in Canada, and in his parent's native Scotland.  Friends and family alike will remember the wisdom, warmth and integrity that defined his life and which he shared with all those he knew and loved.

Ian was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Josephine Hill. He is survived by his daughter, Diane Hill Schienle, and her family; his son, Steven Hill, and his family; his daughter, Debbie Hill Strauch, and her family; and his sister, Judith Ryce. He also leaves behind extended family members and many others whose lives were enriched by knowing him and sharing his unique wit and wisdom.
