Irena Stefania Pozarycka Borowski was born in Hajnówka, Poland on May 10, 1926. In 1941, Irena was separated from her father and siblings, moving with her mother to Wilno, Poland before fleeing to Postawy, Poland as the war progressed. After the German invasion of Russia, Irena and her mother were brought to a labor camp in Esslingen, Germany. Following liberation, she worked as a secretary for the American Army in Esslingen, where she met the love of her life, Ludwig, a Silesian engineering student who one day spied her across a courtyard and was immediately smitten. Irena immigrated to the U.S. with her mother in 1949, and Ludwig quickly followed. After they married in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1950, they had their four daughters Krystyna (Sandy), Arlene (Jim), Beatrice (Martin), and Maria (Art).
After raising their family in Cambridge and Acton, Massachusetts, Irena and Ludwig surrendered their suburban life and came to Leisure World in Silver Spring to be near two daughters. Several years after Ludwig succumbed to Parkinson's disease, Irena moved in with her daughter Arlene, where she lived happily for eight years until her heart failed. In addition to her daughters, Irena also left many grandchildren - James (Rena), Angus (Michelle), Alistair (Bijou), Teresa (Ignatius), Irka (Ryan), Joey (Kristen), Tom, Sean, Carol (Zander), Emily, David, and Chris, and three great grandchildren - Wyndham, Boden, and Jonah. Irena is also survived by her honorary daughter, Izabella Piwowarska, who offered her great care and companionship in her later years.
Irena will be truly missed by her daughters and grandchildren. Each has their own very special memories of "Oma" -- who showed all of them a deep and irreplaceable love. The family will hold a private burial, but funeral services will be announced at a future date. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Catholic Relief Services or https://www.crs.org/.
