John Hohmann Obituary

Dr. John Reno Hohmann, 90, a Research Pharmacologist at the US Food and Drug Administration from 1962 to 1993, died April 15th, 2018, at the Encore Assisted Living facility in Ellicott City, MD.   He was born in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Morgan Reno Hohmann and Daisy B. Vaughn.  Dr. Hohmann was raised in Kansas City and St. Louis Missouri graduating in 1945 from Maplewood Richmond Heights High School in Maplewood, Missouri outside of St. Louis.  

Dr. Hohmann attended the University of Iowa from 1945 to 1951 where he received a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D in Pharmacy.   He performed his military service as a hospital Pharmacist at the U.S. Army Hospital in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and as a Researcher in the renal physiology lab at the Army Medical Research Laboratory in Fort Knox, Kentucky from 1954 to 1955. Dr. Hohmann was employed as Research Pharmacist at Parke Davis and Co. in Detroit, Michigan from 1956 to 1961, and in 1962 began his career as both a Research Chemist and Pharmacologist with the Food and Drug Administration until his retirement in 1993.  

Dr. Hohmann was active in the Washington area as a trombonist from the early 1960’s up until the mid 1990’s, playing for numerous jazz big bands and concert bands such as the Rockville Concert Band and the Redskins Marching Band.  

In 1963 John married pharmacist Lena E. Norrlin in Uppsala, Sweden raising their family in both Silver Spring and North Bethesda, Maryland.  Together they had two children.  John is survived by his son, Lars Hohmann and daugther-in-law Grace Reusing, of Ellicott City, Maryland, and daughter, Ingrid Hohmann, of Northampton, Massachusetts, and two grandchildren.
