John McIver Obituary

John Fordie McIver, aged 78, a devoted family man, legendary problem-solver, and widely appreciated for his loving, handy, and selfless nature, passed peacefully on August 27, 2024, in Towson, Maryland. Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, to Andrew J. McIver and Jean Fordie McIver, John's early years were shaped by the strong family bonds that would become the very core of his life. At the age of 15, on a blind date, he met June Neishel McIver, who would become his forever high school sweetheart, and future loving wife who has been his steadfast companion in life's journey for 63 years; 57 of those happily married.

John's pursuit of knowledge took him to the University of Delaware, where he earned his degree in Electrical Engineering, demonstrating the intellect and dedication that would serve him throughout his life. His early career as an engineer at Bethlehem Steel in Steelton, Pennsylvania, was a testament to his technical abilities and problem-solving skills. However, his entrepreneurial spirit and prioritization of family led John and his brother to acquire Stanco, a small manufacturing company in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1984. This significant decision not only altered the trajectory of his professional life but also fulfilled his desire for family togetherness, as it afforded relatives the cherished opportunity to grow up in close proximity.

John's life was filled with the joys of fatherhood, the pride of grandparenthood, and the unwavering support he provided to all he encountered. Together, John and June raised a family graced with three children who reflected their integrity, love, and warmth: Vera Jean McIver (James Hoover), Andrew Michael McIver (Christina Tanner), Robert John McIver (Amy Luster McIver). He was a pillar of strength and inspiration for his grandchildren, Michael and William Simmons, Addison Hoover, Cayden McIver, Anna June McIver, and Jack Davis, nurturing in them the values of love, family, and resilience.

Predeceased by his parents Andrew J. McIver and Jean Fordie McIver, his brother Andrew McIver, and his father and mother in law Vera and Michael  Neishel. John's enduring presence remains with his family, including his sister-in-law Wendy McIver and his nieces Jean and Jennifer McIver.

John's essence was characterized by his natural ability to repair what was broken, earning him the affectionate moniker of Mr. Fix-it. He was in his element when surrounded by wires, widgets, and wrenches; no challenge was too great, no problem unsolvable. His hands were not only skilled but also extended in compassion and assistance to anyone in need—family, friend, or stranger.

Above his outstanding professional achievements and intellect, was John's defining role as the patriarch of a tightly-knit family, of which he was the cornerstone. Moments spent with his loved ones, from Sunday dinners to casual backyard barbecues, were cherished. Christmas was always his favorite time of year, as he was surrounded with all the gifts he had in life.  He was happy to open his home to all, and would ensure the house was filled with gifts and libations for all to celebrate. His legacy lives on through the stories and wisdom shared at these gatherings.  John was always ready to talk shop to help find the most effective and simple solution to any challenge, which were trademarks of his engaging character.

John Fordie McIver's journey through life was marked by an unwavering commitment to his family, and a kindheartedness that touched all who knew him. He navigated life's complexities with the grace of a man who understood that the most profound legacies are built on the foundation of love, service, and family.

John will be deeply loved and missed but forever celebrated by his family and others who were close to him.
