Joseph Terrence (Terry) Irrgang, 85, passed away on August 12, 2024 in Ellicott City, Maryland. He was born March 31, 1939 to Gertrude Hudson and Edwin Irrgang in Dagsboro, Delaware. Terry was a devoted husband to his wife of 63 years, Jean Nelson Irrgang. He was the loving father of three children: Scott Irrgang of Northeast MD, Jeff Irrgang of Glyndon MD, and Susan Smith of Fredericksburg VA. Terry is survived by his 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Terry was also survived by his brother Ted Irrgang.
Upon graduation from Drexel University, Terry went to work for Georgia Pacific Gypsum in Baltimore, Md. Terry was eventually asked to transfer to Atlanta, Ga., however his roots were in Baltimore and in Pennsylvania so he left Georgia Pacific and with the support of his wife and the confidence in himself he founded The Eldersburg Building Supply Co. in June of 1969. Terry and Jeff proudly managed the company until 2014 when through hard work and the loyalty of its many employees the company was sold to a private equity firm in Baltimore.
Jean and Terry raised their 3 children in Reisterstown, Md and would eventually build their dream home in Glenelg, Md. Terry and Jean were avid golfers and members of Turf Valley Country Club until his death. It was the love of the game that drew Terry and Jean to Sarasota Florida where they had a winter residence in Palm-Aire Country Club. They owned several properties until their eventual permanent move back to Maryland in 2021. Terry and Jean’s outgoing personalities and competitive spirit brought them many lasting friendships and great stories throughout the years.
Terry was truly a great man whose impact will be forever felt by his family. He was honest, loyal, giving, generous, wise, hard-working, fun-loving, and always a family-man. His unconditional and loving support of his lovely wife Jean was unwavering as she has battled dementia for several years. Terry’s upbeat and positive attitude along with his charisma brightened the day of his wife but also the staff of Lighthouse Senior Living in Ellicott City. Terry visited Jean faithfully every day until his death.
Terry was a great husband, great father, great grandfather and most of all a great person. Terry will be deeply missed by his family and all those that had the pleasure of meeting him.
