Ki Moon Chung Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ki Moon Chung of Ellicott City, Maryland, who went home to be with his Lord on October 11, 2024, just two days after celebrating his 78th birthday. Born on October 9, 1946 in Seoul, South Korea, Ki Moon was the eldest son and second of seven children. He was predeceased by his parents Chung Chan Suck and Lee Kum Soon. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Helen Hyun Kyung Chung, daughter Judy Chung O'Brien (Brendan), his sons Michael Chung (Su Ji) and Steven Chung (Liz).

In 1974, Ki Moon with his bride and newborn embarked to the D.C. area with limited resources but boundless hope. A well-respected jeweler, he dedicated 40 years of his life to the craft by meticulously organizing his workspace, ensuring every tool is perfectly aligned and every gemstone is carefully cataloged. His hands moved with precision, each motion deliberate, as he sketched intricate designs that blended artistry with engineering.  Every piece carried a unique work of art, crafted with care and infused with his passion.

Beyond his profession, Ki Moon’s life was a testament to his belief that one should do everything with a whole heart. This philosophy was evident in his dedication to his family, his work, and his community. He found immense joy in traveling, exploring national parks, playing golf, singing karaoke, and hosting large family gatherings filled with love, laughter, and delicious meals. Masterfully renovating multiple houses by building his own deck and basement for his family to enjoy, Ki Moon could fix anything or figure out how it could be done. He cherished serving at his church and spending time with his family.

Ki Moon was a proud Harabogi ("Habi") to his eight grandchildren: Sophie, Karis, and Camden (Judy); Logan, Gavin, and Lucas (Michael); and Annabel and Lawrence (Steven). His legacy of love, sacrifice, and dedication will forever be remembered by his family and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held at Bethany Korean United Methodist Church, 8971 Chapel Ave. Ellicott City, MD 21043 on Sunday, October 13, 2024 at 5 PM.
