Margaret Furlong Haskell was born in 1925 to Irish immigrants, Margaret and Thomas Furlong, who inspired a passion for education in Margaret and her brother William Furlong (deceased). She was the first person in her family to receive a college degree, not a norm for women of that era. She attended Ladycliff College and was known for her love of history and her prowess at debate. She married Allen G. Haskell after he returned from serving as a marine and being wounded in WWII. Margaret taught in Maine, and she moved to Boston with Allen where he attended college, and they had their son Allan Haskell (deceased). When they moved to Pittsburg, they had a daughter, Margaret Haskell Garroway. As they moved to New Jersey and then New York, Margaret Furlong Haskell raised her two children. After her husband Allen passed away, and she survived breast cancer, Margaret moved to Maryland to be with her daughter, her son-in-law, James DePue, and her three grandchildren and their significant others: Michael and Nicole, Sean and Katy, and Daniel and Emily. She enjoyed family gatherings, especially in the role of “Gigi” as her great grandchildren arrived: Vincent, Jackson, Tucker and Lucy. She is also survived by many loving family and friends.
