On July 31, 2024, Marie Allison Murphy; beloved wife of the late John C. Murphy, III; loving mother of Kathleen Valdivia (Aaron), Sheila Idzerda (Yves), Margaret “Peggy” Haase (late Paul), John C. Murphy, IV (Joan), Michael Murphy (Jamie), Daniel Murphy (Beth) and Patricia Brumbaugh. Also survived by 23 grandchildren, David Valdivia (Cady), Patrick Valdivia, Claire Valdivia (Andrew Back), Julia Valdivia (Todd Myers), Kevin Valdivia (Rachel Dooley), Anna Odermann (Aaron), Laura Idzerda, Sara Idzerda, Allison Haase, Paul Haase, Will Haase, Erica Haase, Pinya Murphy, Chaan Murphy, Kiet Murphy, Kaitlyn Murphy, Ryan Murphy, Colin Murphy, Corinna Murphy, Emmeline Murphy, Neil Murphy, Tom Brumbaugh, Tim Brumbaugh; sister-in-law Maryann Murphy, nephews Matthew (Denise) and Brendan (Jackie) Murphy and their families.
Born in Jersey City, NJ in 1936, Allison was the only child of William C. and Anna Mae Scully. Allison graduated from Catholic University, majoring in math, where she met her husband, John, in her freshman year in college. Allison and John married upon her graduation in 1958 and moved to South Bend, Indiana where John was attending graduate school at Notre Dame.
After John completed his master’s degree in physics, the young family moved back to Maryland and settled in Howard County. Allison stayed at home to raise their seven children until all entered school full time and then began working in the Howard County School System. She taught math at Wilde Lake High School and after stepping down from classroom teaching worked as a Home and Hospital teacher for many years in the county.
Allison and John were heavily involved in local and state politics, their church and the community. They enjoyed worldwide travel and loved telling stories about their adventures once they returned home.
Family will receive friends at the Harry H. Witzke’s Family Funeral Home, 4112 Old Columbia Pike, Ellicott City, on Monday, August 5, 2024, from 2 – 4 & 6 – 8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist, Wilde Like Interfaith Center on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, beginning at 12 noon. Interment following in Good Shepherd Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the American Heart Association.
