Marjorie "Margie" Royo Obituary

Margie Royo, 85, of the Allview Estates area, passed peacefully on Thursday, March 7, 2024, surrounded by her daughters, Dawne and Tammy (Johnnie). Margie was a lifelong Marylander having been born in Baltimore to the late Charles and Anna (Duerbeck) Westerman, Jr. Margie was one of 6 children: Charlotte-deceased, Charles III-deceased (Patricia-deceased/Karen), Anita (Fred), Robert-deceased (Joyce), and Susan (Ron). She was a dear Aunt to eleven nieces and nephews.

Margie married the love of her life, John Juando “Sonny” Royo, Jr. (deceased), in 1956. Upon returning from their honeymoon they moved into their newly built townhome in Dundalk. In 1964 Margie and Sonny moved to Howard County with their young family into a custom home that Sonny designed. As a couple, they became “almost family” with their close neighbors. Being in a new community meant house parties to socialize and to get to know each other. Some of those bonds almost sixty years later still exist.

Margie was the ultimate homemaker and did not go to work until 1977 when her youngest child, John III (Frances), was in fifth grade. She was known as “Hot Lips” at the Olan Mills Photography Call Center. She gave this business a year and then joined the Howard County Public School System in 1978. She was a mainstay at Hammond Elementary as an Instructional Paraeducator, retiring in 2001.

Margie was known for her culinary talents and baking skills. She loved to entertain her extended family and friends with summer cookouts; going all out to serve more than burgers and hotdogs! Margie enjoyed baking and decorating cakes in the Wilton style with buttercream designs. Many of her school staff would place orders for their family celebrations. In 1983, to celebrate her parents’ 50th Wedding Anniversary, she decorated a three-tiered cake to take to the celebration with family.

After retirement, Margie and Sonny would walk the Columbia Mall for exercise, eat breakfast at Bob Evans Restaurant, and gather all the “specials” at a minimum of three local grocery stores! They continued the family tradition of spending family vacations in Walt Disney World and even a trip to Disneyland. Margie was known for restaurant menu shopping at Walt Disney World. There was not a menu displayed that she did not stop and read! She also loved visiting the Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World to spend time with “her” gorillas.

Margie was an inspiration handling life’s ups and downs with a mix of grace and strength. Love for her family, love of life, and all the good it holds. She trusted that love and faith would see her through. Whatever came her way she kept moving forward and proving time and again that strength is beautiful.
