Mary Scala-Demby Obituary

Mary Susan Scala-Demby, affectionately known as Susan, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2023, in Ellicott City, Maryland, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's and dementia. Born on October 20, 1947, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Susan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and cousin.

Throughout her life, Susan was known for her intelligence, analytical skills, and spirited personality. She was a dedicated student who achieved a Master's Degree in Public Administration (MPA). Her passion for learning and helping others led her to a successful career as a Supervisor for Montgomery County's Department of Permitting Services, where she remained until her retirement.

Susan was an affectionate wife to her loving husband, Nilsin Demby, for 40 years. Their unbreakable bond and commitment to each other served as a shining example for their family and friends. Together, they raised their son, Zachary Demby, who went on to marry Maki Matsumura and blessed Susan with a granddaughter, Naomi Demby,

In addition to her immediate family, Susan is survived by daughter in-law Gwen Demby and great-granddaughter in law Gianni Logan, her sister, Carol Salvatore, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who will cherish her memory.  Her niece, Diane Hiler, and nephew, Michael Salvatore, as well as her cousins Valerie Deodino, Janice Ashby, Pamela Giannuzzi, Rosalie Scala, Anthony Scala, Rosemary Zielonko, Joseph Warmt, Joan Niles, and Patricia Campione, will remember Susan as a caring, supportive, and loving family member who always had a kind word and a listening ear.

As Helen Keller once said, "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart." Susan's love, kindness, and unwavering spirit will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her memory will be cherished, and she will be dearly missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Susan's memory to the Alzheimer's Association or a charity of your choice. A celebration of Susan's life will be held at a later date, where family and friends can come together to honor her memory and share stories of her remarkable life.

Rest in peace, Susan. Your spirit and love will live on in the hearts of those you leave behind.
