Michelle Brooke Johanningsmeier

Michelle Brooke Johanningsmeier, 44, passed away on February 15, 2026. Born in Leavenworth, KS on August 13, 1981, Michelle lived a life defined by generosity, service, and unwavering love for her family and community.

Michelle earned her degree in English from Texas A&M University, where her lifelong love of books flourished. She always believed, with a smile, that “the book was better.” A proud piccolo player in the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band, she performed alongside her sister Barbara—the two becoming the first-ever sisters in the band’s history. Upon graduating, Michelle married her college sweetheart, Benjamin, and served four years as an Army Reserve Officer. 

Michelle was endlessly proud of her daughter, Gillian, and son, Colin. She delighted in sharing stories about them—moments of kindness, sweetness, responsibility, talent, and love warmed her heart and brought a smile to her face. 

As Ben’s Marine Corps career took their family to bases across the country, Michelle built community wherever they lived, spending two decades nurturing her family and supporting those around her. Her firsthand understanding of the military informed her work supporting the Air National Guard—work she approached with both professionalism and personal commitment.

In her relatively short life, Michelle helped and cared for countless people. Her boundless enthusiasm, wit, energy, and heart were a powerful force in every community she touched. She was an enthusiastic supporter of friends, local schools, PTAs, and charitable organizations; generously giving her time and talents to make the world better.

Her home was a place of laughter, shared meals, and meaningful connection. Whether hosting intimate gatherings, organizing galas and carnivals, volunteering, or cheering on her children or her friends’ children, Michelle gave of herself fully and joyfully. She loved crafting—especially quilting—practicing yoga, taking long walks, and bringing people together through thoughtful entertaining.

Michelle is survived by her husband, Ben; her children, Gillian and Colin; her dad, Michael and his wife, Julie; her sister, Barbara and her husband, Sean; and her nieces, Caitlin and Emily. Michelle was preceded in death by her mom, DeAnn.

Above all else, Michelle had a remarkable ability to make others feel seen, supported, and deeply loved. Michelle’s legacy is one of generosity, compassion, creativity, and enduring love. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, February 28th at 11:00am at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Ellicott City, MD.
