Paul Leonard Crawford, Jr., passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday morning, March 15, 2024, at the Fairhaven Retirement Community in Sykesville, Maryland. 

He was the son of Paul Leonard Crawford and Jean Henrietta Hostler, of Altoona, Pennsylvania, now deceased.

Paul Crawford, Jr. graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in Washington, DC with the class of 1946. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1948 and served aboard three aircraft carriers during the Korean War.

In 1954, he met Dorothy Lynn Hendrix, and they married that same year, going on to have three children, Keith Allen, Wayne Stewart, and Carol Lynn.

After nine years of military service, he joined the National Security Agency as a Cryptologist, where he remained until his retirement in 1983. His career included a three-year tour of duty at the United States European Command in Stuttgart, Germany.  He settled with his family in Columbia, Maryland in 1970 and worked at Fort Meade, Maryland.

He was a member of DeMolay International, The Royal Order of Scotland (Freemasons), and Shriners International. He was also a member of Glen Mar United Methodist Church in Ellicott City, Maryland.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy H. Crawford, his son Wayne S. Crawford and daughter-in-law Diedra A. Crawford, his daughter Carol C. Wilson and son-in-law Richard A. Wilson, grandchildren Justin M. Crawford, Eleanor N. Crawford, Monica L. Wilson, and Keith Allen Francis Wilson.  Paul was predeceased by his son, Keith A. Crawford, and grandson, Alexander R. Crawford.

A memorial gathering will be held at Harry H. Witzke’s Family Funeral Home in Ellicott City, Maryland on Friday, March 29 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m; with a memorial service beginning at 4:00 p.m. He will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Paul’s memory to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 N. Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607 (donate.lovetotherescue.org)
