Paul Klose, husband of Harriet Marion Klose, died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday afternoon, October 22, 2020 at the Heartlands Retirement Community in Ellicott City, MD.
He was the son of Paul Klose and Frieda Katharina Klose of Brooklyn, NY, now deceased. He is predeceased by a sister, Erica K Macomber.
Paul graduated as a member of the Honor Society from Alexander Hamilton Vocational High School with the class of 1949 and attended the City College of NY. He joined the US Navy in 1951 and received the American Spirit Award in June of 1951, and was designated as an Honor Man. He served on the USS Kula Gulf CVE-108 during the Korean war.
He was employed at Curtis Wright RAM JET Engineering in NY after his honorable discharge from the Navy. Paul then worked for Bell Laboratories in NYC, where he met Harriet. They married in April of 1959. In 1961, the family moved to Pennsylvania where Paul worked at Fairchild Hilliard. In 1962, the family moved again to Maryland where Paul was employed at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, until his retirement in 1994.
His first 20 years at APL were spent within the BID group, working with communications between satellites, Navy missiles, and submarines. He transferred to the Space Department in 1981 and worked as a Systems Payload Engineer for the Space Shuttle HUT Program. He also worked on electronic interfaces and spacecraft simulators for TOPEX, MORAR, SALT, Delta 183, MSX UVISI, and NEAR. He also provided support for Delta 181 and was a member of the integration & test team for GEOSTAT and MSX.
After his retirement, he and Harriet enjoyed traveling both domestically and internationally. They volunteered together for the Commemorative Air Force, and Paul was a member of the American Legion. Both Paul & Harriet were active volunteers at the National Wildlife Center for 20 years.
He is survived by a son, Jeffrey Klose, as well as a daughter, Colette Miller, and son-in-law, James F. Miller, grandchildren James M. Miller & wife Chelsea Miller, Christine Miller & Matt R., and “pseudo-son”, Jonathan Miller.
