Philip Wilner Obituary

Philip Peter Wilner, 67, of Ellicott City, Maryland passed away on Saturday, November 21st, 2020 after a courageous battle with Covid19.

Phil was born to Constance and Alexander Wilner on October 18th, 1953, living a happy childhood with his two older brothers, in Michigan and Pennsylvania, before setting his roots in Maryland.

He graduated from Churchill HS in 1971, then continued on as a business and finance major at the University of Maryland, College Park. A “forever Terp”, he was a part of the UMD Class of 1975, where he not only earned his degree, but he also made so many lifelong friendships. After college, Phil spent many years working for the Holiday Inn Corp, working his way up to the General Manager position. In 1991, he left the hospitality industry, and opened Village Deli and Cafe, in Olney, MD. As the catering side of the deli grew, the little deli in Olney morphed into what is today - Gourmet Express Catering, Inc. in Laurel, MD.

Phil leaves behind his mother Constance Wilner; brothers, Mark (and wife Judy) Wilner and Paul Wilner; daughter Jennifer (and husband Guy) Scarpaci; son Sean (and wife Shannon) Wilner, as well as his beloved grandchildren - Guy III, Ashley, Kaitlyn, Joseph, Taylor and Samantha. He was preceded in death by his father, Alexander Wilner.

Phil was known for his electric smile, and boisterous laugh. Being able to brighten any room he walked in, and entertain anyone in it, he enjoyed most the time he was able to spend with family and great friends. He was admired and respected by all who knew him, and made any friend feel like a part of his family. He is gone too soon, and will be unbelievably missed.

Services will be held privately, due to the pandemic; however, a Celebration of Life will be held when we can safely allow the party to reflect the fullness of his life. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation, in his memory, to your charity of choice.
