Rebecca Ann Barkanic

Rebecca Ann Barkanic (80), beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2025.

Born on January 5, 1945, in Enola, Pennsylvania, Rebecca was the daughter of the late Glenn Rothrock Hanawalt and Ina Kirk Hanawalt. She attended Shippensburg College, where she pursued her education before embarking on a life dedicated to family and community.

Rebecca met the love of her life, Richard J. Barkanic, during his apprenticeship as a union electrician, and they married in 1966, beginning a beautiful journey together that lasted 53 years until Richard’s passing in 2020.

She is survived by her devoted children, Kristin Bambini (Geoff) and John Barkanic (Jessica), and her cherished grandchildren, Madison Bambini, Drew Walton, Mason Bambini, Gia Bambini, Jackson Barkanic, Jameson Barkanic, and Jaelyn Barkanic. She is also survived by her loving brother, Ray Hanawalt (Cynthia), her sister-in-law Marcella "Marcy" Hanawalt, as well as her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Barbara and Mark Harrison. She leaves behind her niece Amanda Stafford (Stephen) and great-nieces Elizabeth and Katherine Stafford, along with many extended family members and friends who will forever hold her memory close. Rebecca was preceded in death by her brother, Lee Hanawalt.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Greenhill Cemetery in Waynesboro, PA.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Rebecca Ann Barkanic’s memory may be directed to Wintergrowth in Columbia, Maryland. Wintergrowth is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the independence and quality of life for seniors and adults with disabilities through assisted living, memory care, and day programs.
