Richard enlisted in the Marines after graduating from Gonzaga High School in Washington DC. Later he joined the seminary before deciding he ultimately wanted to have a family of his own. Richard studied Geology at the University of Colorado and pursued a career as a geologist in Wyoming. He then spent time working as a missionary with Fr. Beyond his professional life, Richard was a devoted family man. He shared a beautiful and enduring love with his beloved wife, Margaret, and together they raised a family that became his pride and joy. His daughter Kathleen, and her husband Steve, his son Michael, along with daughter-in-law Danielle, and his youngest, Megan, were the center of his world. Richard's sister, Jane McDaniel, along with his cherished grandchildren, Addie, Abbie, and Johnnie, and numerous nephews and nieces, all held special places in his heart. Richard was preceded in death by his mother Olive Evangeline, his father John Marshall Flynn, his brother Marshall Flynn and his sister Evelyn Casey.

Always ready for an adventure, Richard's passions extended to the simple pleasures of life. He was an ardent fan of the Washington Nationals.
